National Drinking Water Week Proclamation , ; CITY OF ROSEMOUNT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR ACTiON CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: May 2, 1995 : AGENDA ITEM: National Drinking Water Week AGENDA SECTION: Proclamation Department Heads Reports PREPARED BY: Bud Osmundson AGENDA N City EngineerlPublic Works Director 1 EM ATTACHMENTS: Proclamation, Water Information APPROVED BY: ` National Drinking Water Week will be observed throughout the Nation for the week of May 7 through May 13, 1995. This is the time for all of us to promote the public's awareness about the role that water plays in our daily lives. It is also an opportunity for communities to show their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our Public Works Employees who supply many of us with safe, clean drinking water. Some important facts about water which can be found on the attached information: • The earth's water supply has not increased since the beginning of time. 97% of the earths water is in the oceans and seas leaving only 3°10 as usable for human consumption. This water is continually recycled through the earths atmosphere, oceans and ground. • The human brain is 75% water and the human body is 66% water. - • In the United States there are 59,000 community public water systems with over 1 million miles of water pipelines in the United States and Canada. • It takes 1,851 gallons of water to refine one barrel of crude oiL ` • The average household uses 107,00 gallons of water per year. The City of Rosemount potable water system is served by three main system wells plus one backup well and two rural water system wells. We have two water towers, Chippendale Avenue with a 500,000 gallon capacity, and Connemara Trail with a 1,000,000 gallon capacity. In 1994 the City used approximately 350,000,000 gallons of water or approximately 35,000 gallons of water for each person that is served by our water system. The City's water treatment includes chlorine for killing of germs and bacteria, fluoride for improving the health of our teeth and polyphosphates which sequester iron and manganese in the water so that it does not stain our clothes in washing. The cost of City water delivered to your home is 0.001 dollar per gallon. The average monthly cost for water is approximately 510.00 while cable T.V. averages 526.00, the minimum phone bill is approximately S26.00 and your trash collection bill is approximately $15.00 per month. High quality drinking water is normally taken for granted. We ask that the Mayor proclaim May 7th through May 13th as National Drinking Water Week so that the Citizens of Rosemount . recognize how important their water is and that we should conserve and protect all ihe fresh water that we can.
