The Gity has encumbered funds for a sidewalk repair project for the older part of the City
this past year. Staff has recently completed the specifications and map for the
appropriate areas to be repaired. The total amount of work is estimated to be under the
525,000 limit established by Statute for bidding. Therefore, we will send out a request
for quotations from a number of contractors for this sidewalk reconstruction project.
These reconstruction projects have a bid price of at least 3 to 4 times as much is
normally paid for new sidewalk when constructed in a total street reconstruction project
or new subdivision.
We have had a number of complaints about sidewalks in the downtown area in the last
year. Many of these are due to curb stops (valves) which are either City water valves, or
gas company valves that have been pushed up by frost action and are in the sidewalk
area. We have taken care of many of these tripping hazards already and with the repair
as scheduled it will improve the older infrastructure in the downtown area.
The total estimated cost will be approximately S20,000 with some alternatives to doing
the restoration work with City Maintenance Staff. We will bring back the quotes, perhaps
as soon as July 5th, and complete the work in July or early August.
