The total capacity of our three (3> main wells (#3, #7 & #8) is approximately 4.175
million gallons per day. Generally accepted engineering practices in regards to the
number of wells prescribes that the City should have enough well capacity to meet the
maximum daily demand of its water system with one of its wells out of commission. By
designing it this way a safety factor is built in to allow for increases in demand as the
City grows and to allow for routine or emergency maintenance of a well. The City's
capacity if we lose one well is approximately 2.45 milfion gailons per day.
On July 12, 1995 the three wells pumped approximately 2.9 miliion gallons of water,
which is almost 450,000 gallons more than our safety net would allow. Our concern is
that if we lose a well we may have to immediately go to some type of sprinkling ban for
the City. A 5/8 inch hose can put out 500 gallons per hour. When 500 homes have the
hoses running it results in an extra 250,000 gallon demand each hour.
Some area communities have permanent odd/even sprinkling bans whereby residents are
asked to sprinkle their yards on odd days if their house number is an odd number and
vice-versa for even days. This policy has two goals, the first being the immediate
conservation of water and the second being the delaying the cost of drilling new wells. A
new well and pump house today can cost up to '/2 million dollars.
This item is on the agenda only to keep you informed and to be aware that if we would
lose a well due to a mechanical failure we may fiave to immediately declare a sprinkling
ban for the City.
