At the present time the fire department has 31 members including both
regular firefighters, probationary firefighters, and firefighters that are
on leave. The membership feels that it is necessary to add to the number
of firefighters that we currently have. The membership committee is
currently accepting applications. If approval is received to add eight
additional people to the fire department during 1994 and incur the
associated medical expenses, our intent would be to test applicants with an
agility test, written test, and oral interview and rank them accordingly.
The top eight candidates would be sent to Dr. Detlefsen' s office for fire
department employment physicals. That medical screening is the first major
expense that the fire department incurs when adding new personnel. The
second expense comes after the personnel are approved and hepatitis
vaccinations are necessary.
Money for this initial medical screening and subsequent follow-up with
hepatitis B series vaccinations has been budgeted for in Account
#101-42210-01-306 and was a�so encumbered from 1993 and held over to be
spent in 1994 .
The cost for fire department pre-employment physicals is $600 per
firefighter and the hepatitis B series vaccination is $200. The total cost
per firefighter is $800,00. At the present time the total medical
expenditure to process eight firefighters would be $6,400 .
The names of those candidates, which are ultima.tely successful at all
phases of the testing process, will be brought back to you at a later date
for your approval.
RECOIyIlKENDED ACTION: Motion to authorize the fire department to spend
$6,400 for medical expenses associated with the hiring of eight
probationary firefighters with this expenditure coming from Account
#101-42210-01-306 and encumbered monies from 1993 .
