ATTACIiENTS: Cost Summary Sheet, Flyer APPROVED BYz
The 1994 Spring Clean Up day has been tentatively set for May 21, from
7:30 a.m. to 2 : 00 p.m. The clean up is scheduled to be held at
Knutsons site on 160th Street.
This has been an annual event for several years . One which is
anticipated by residents and widely used. Over the last 5 years we
average 82 tons of materials that are cleaned from yards, garages and
basements . The only materials not accepted are hazardous and
household hazardous wastes, compostable materials, and automobiles .
Residents are instructed on how and where to dispose of those items.
Appliances, ma.ttresses, and air conditioners are accepted for a
nominal fee. This year I have negotiated with JR Appliances in Eagan
to pick up al1 appliances . The cost for appliance disposal is covered
100o by fees collected.
Since 1988 the cost for clean up day has averaged $10, 625 . We have
budgeted $10, 000 in 1994 to cover the costs. We are always looking
for ways to maximize the event and minimize costs . This year there
will be stricter enforcement of collection for oversized loads. Those
people disposing of more than 5 cubic yards will be charged $Q .05/lb.
5 cubic yards is equal to two standard pick up loads or 30 standard
size garbage cans .
A new item added this year is collection of old fishing tackle, lures,
rods, reels, etc. for Tackle for Tomorrow. This organization
redistributes the equipment to underpriveledged youth. This effort
provides these youth with opportunity for recreation and enjoyment of
Minnesota' s natural sports.
This is a joint effort with Knutson Services. They provide the
facility and labor for assisting residents in unloading and
transportation of materials to the landfill . The City supplies labor
of 2 or 3 people to check drivers licenses and collect disposal fees
when necessary and traffic control . The Dakota County Explorer Scouts
also assist with traffic control . We have customarily given the
Explorers a $100 donation for their assistance.
Staff recommends council support for this community event.
