The Department of Public Safety is seeking proposals from municipal and
county law enforcement agencies to conduct publicized overtime enforcement
projects adressing the issues of impaired driving and passenger protection
use (SAFE & 50BER) .
The US/DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the
Department's Office of Traffic Safety plans to have up to $300, 000.00
available to fund "SAFE & SOBER" efforts in local cammunities.
The Rosemount Police Department has applied for such a grant to fund
enhanced enforcement efforts in the areas of seat belt compliance and
alcohol enforcement. The only requirement of this grant, should we
receive it, would be that we have start up funds available as the grant
funds are paid on a cost reimbursement basis.
The purpose of this grant is to enhance our present traffic enforcement
with overtime enforcement hours, specifically targeting times and places
that will maximize impaired driving and selt belt enforcement.
The number of grants funded will be determined by the number, type and
quality of applications received.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve the Police Department's
participation in the "SAFE & SOBER" program should the grant
proposal be accepted.
