It is appropriate at the first Council meeting in January for Council to
designate the City' s official newspaper for publication of the City' s
various legal notices.
It is my recommendation that we continue using the "Farmington Independent° ,
as the City' s official newspaper. '
Mr. Heikkila's proposal for legals is as follows:
$2 . 00 a column inch;
Free re-run in the "Town Pages" ; and
Free run of City Council Minutes in the "Town Pages° .
This Week Newspapers proposed $6 .77 per column inch, and the Minnesota Sun
Publications ( "Current") proposed $7 .92 per column inch.
In 1992, Mr. Heikkila charged $1.00 per column inch, but even with a 50%
increase, he is way below the other newspapers ' costs.
With such an attractive proposal from Mr. Heikkila and the fact that our
legals and minutes will be published in the "Town Pages" , this is the most �
economic way for the city to publish its legals and yet keep its residents
and business people informed.
For your information, Mr. Heikkila advised he hopes to meet the
requirements in the near future which would allow the "Rosemount Town
Pages" to be used as an official newspaper. I will inform you when this
occurs. Council may then want to consider designating the "Town Pages" as
the City' s official newspaper.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: MOTION TO DESIGNATE THE "F.ARMINGTON INDEPENDENT"
AS THE CITY OF ROSEMOUNT OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER FOR 1993 .
