Discussion of and Future Use of Naval Satellite Operations CenterCITY OF ROSEMOUNT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR ACTION PORT AUTHORITY COMMISSION MEETING DATE: JANUARY 19, 1993 AGENDA ITEM: AGENDA SECTION: FUTURE USE OF NAVAL SATELLITE OPERATIONS CENTR WORK SESSION PREPARED BY: AGENDA JOHN MILLER, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR I ITEM 14 FU ATTACHMENTS: APP VED NONE On January 5 Navy Lieutenant Harold Nevill visited with the city council and announced the planned phase-out of the Naval Satellite Operations Center. The center will cease operations in December 1996. In the interim, some land and buildings will become available as the navy no longer has use for them. Commissioner Sinnwell and I toured the facility with Lt. Nevill on January 9 wondering if the buildings could be used for either incubator space or as revenue producing lease space. Kathy Boudreau from the Rosemount Research Center will be visiting Sue Weinberg at the Minneapolis Campus next week. They will contact me then to arrange a meeting for the early part of February. Presently the navy pays an annual rent of (I think) $7,700 annually for the 18 acre site. The navy erected the buildings and put in other infrastructure items at its expense. If the university requires it, the navy must remove all improvements when it leaves, something its not interested in doing. A navy appraisal values the land and buildings at $10,000,000. If you want to tour the property or visit with the university or navy people, it can be arranged. The purpose of this? If you want to look at assuming control of the site, let me know. RECOMMENDED ACTION: None. Work session item. PORT AUTHORITY ACTION:
