AGENDA ITEM: FIRE STATION REFERENDUM
AGENDA SECTION:

PREPARED BY: STEPHAN JILK, CITY ADMINISTRATOR

The Fire Station staff committee, the Fire Station Citizen Committee and
the Fire Apparatus Committee have been meeting to review cost estimates,
site plans and equipment specifications to establish design and cost
estimates for the referendum in November.
Cost estimates for the completion of the construction of the station and
remodeling of the existing station and the purchase of the new aerial truck
are now available. The cost estimates were presented to the Citizens
Committee on Thursday evening and these estimates are attached for your
consideration.
The Citizens Committee took three separate actions on Thursday evening;
1) To recommend to the City Council that the Ballot for the referendum
include one question and that question include the cost for the
complete package of the cost of the new station, the remodeling of the
current station and the purchase of the new aerial truck.
2) that the committee conduct a survey of the residents of the two
apartment complexes immediately adjoining the site to the west and the
east to get their input on how to improve upon the chosen sight if the
station is located there. The Committee voiced some concern about the
fact that there are so many children in the immediate area and the use
of fencing, landscaping, berming may be suggested to provide a more
suitable final site.
3) that the architect research other cities to see if fire stations in
similar locations have experienced any problems with pedestrian or
vehicular movements.
The Committee would like this additional information in preparation of
educational and promotional material for the referendum.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
None at this time. Item will be placed back on the September 15, 1992
agenda for final approval.
