At the present time the fire department has 33 members including both
regular firefighters and probationary firefighters. The membership feels
that it is necessary to add to the number of firefighters that we currently
have. The Membership Committee currently has 10 applications on file. If
approval is received to add 3 additional people to the fire department and
incur the associated medical expenses, our intent would be to test the 10
applicants with an agility test, written test, and oral interview and rank
them accordingly. The top 3 candidates would be sent to Dr. Detlefsen's
office fora fire department employment physical. Our intent would be to
hire all 3 persons if they receive approval from our fire department
physician. The names of those 3 candidates which are ultimately successful
at all phases of the testing process will be brought back to you at a later
date for your approval.
Money for this initial medical screening and subsequent follow-up with
hepatitis B series vaccinations has been budgeted in Account
#101-42210-01-306.
The cost for fire department pre-employment physicals is $600.00 per
firefighter and the hepatitis B series vaccinations is $200.00. The total
cost per firefighter is $800.00. At the present time, the total medical
expenditure to process 3 firefighters would be $2,400.00.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Motion to authorize the fire department to spend $2,400 dollars for the
medical expenses associated with the hiring of 3 probationary
firefighters with this expenditure coming from Account
#101-42210-01-306.
