We received a total of 54 applicants for this Maintenance Mechanic I opening. Through veterans preference and application evaluation the field was narrowed to five (5) individuals for interviews. Attached is a memo outlining my recommendation for hiring Mr. Douglas Aldrich. RECOMMENDED ACTION: MOTION TO APPROVE THE HIRING OF DOUGLAS ALDRICH AS MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I WITH SALARIES AND BENEFITS AS OU'T'LINED. COUNCIL ACTION: 5 TO: MAYOR McMENOMY COUNCIL MEMBERS: KLASSEN STARTS WILLCOX WIPPERMANN FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR WASMUND (mow DATE: APRIL 30, 1992 RE: HIRING OF MAINTENANCE MECHANIC We have made an offer of employment to Mr. Douglas Aldrich subject to your approval at the May 5th Council meeting. The emphasis on this position is preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Mr. Aldrich has a vocational certificate in Auto Mechanics from Hennepin County Technical School, and four years of military training in heavy equipment repair and preventive maintenance. For the past four and 1/2 years Mr. Aldrich has been employed by Courier Dispatch as the second shift preventive maintenance supervisor. Because of Mr. Aldrich's qualifications and experience I am requesting Council authorization to start him at Step "B" of the salary range rather than the entry level "A". The salary for Step "A and "B" are $9.00 and $9.67 respectively. Movement within the remaining two steps would occur as follows: Step C $10.37 12 months after starting Step D $11.03 24 months after starting The union contract allows us to increase the starting salary and adjust the time for step adjustments as necessary. The usual step increases and amounts according to contract are: Step A $9.00/hr. Step B $9.67/hr. at 12 months Step C $10.37/hr. at 24 months Step D $11.03/hr. at 36 months All other benefits will be as customarily offered in union contract. I feel that Mr. Aldrich's qualifications and experience along with his willing and eager attitude warrant the salary as proposed. He will be taking an approximate $2.00/hour cut in pay accepting this position. He exhibits a strong family pride. His desire to change to the day shift and spend evenings and weekends with his wife and four children outweighs the cut in pay. We have checked with his references and current employer. All of them give glowing recommendations. I sincerely request Councils consideration and recommend approval of the hiring of Douglas Aldrich.
