In years past, on a voluntary basis, the fire department has always sent
persons to weekend classes. These classes are to brush up on skills or
receive training above and beyond the regular monthly training that a
firefighter undergoes. These classes are held at vocational schools around
the area and at the spring State Fire School in Bloomington.
In the past we have always come to the council for authorization to.send
people to these classes as the classes became available. We have run into
a problem in doing it that way, in that by the time the class is posted,
the firefighters have a chance to read the information, they sign up for
the class, we receive council approval, the firefighters send in their
application, and its received via the mail by the hosting school, that
particular class is usually filled. For that reason, we would like to try
a new approach and receive authorization at the present time to send
firefighters throughout the year.
If the firefighter chooses to attend the two day, weekend class out of town
the cost is $125.00. If they attend the three day state fire school in
Bloomington, the cost is approximately $85.00. The state fire school
charges the $85.00 for tuition, and the weekend vocational class charges
$45.00 for tuition with the other $80.00 going for meals, lodging and
travel expenses.
We have 15 people who are interested in attending a class during the year.
Those 15 attendances times $85.00 per attendance or $125.00 per attendance
equals a $1,700 expenditure.
Money for this training has been budgeted in Accounts #101-42210-01-308
and 331.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Motion to authorize the fire department to spend up to $1,700 for
elective training during 1993, with monies to come from Accounts
#101-42210-01-308 and 331.
