Informational Flyer AP 2. Three Bids This item is a request for authorization to spend $1,372.75 to purchase -a positive pressure ventilation fan. This purchase would be adding new equipment to the fire department and could not be considered replacement of existing equipment. We currently carry fans on our fire trucks, but these fans are for sucking smoke out of a building once a fire has been extinguished. The purpose of a positive pressure fan is to push the fire and smoke out of a building and ventilate it in order to make it possible to enter and begin to fight the fire. This is a relatively new concept. Up until recent years the ventilating of a building was done by sending people up onto the roof, chopping holes and letting the hot air rise and escape. The new method of using a positive pressure fan appears to have two significant advantages: (1) it is much quicker to set up and put into use, (2) it is much safer because we do not have to place people on the roof. Some of our firefighters have attended classes over the last year and a half on this new process. They have brought back many different ideas; we have had fans at the fire station to experiment with; and those firefighters who attended the classes were part of the committee which chose this particular fan. Attached are three bids. It would be our recommendation to purchase a Lifejack, 8 horsepower, Super Brute 24" Positive Pressure Fan from Hazard Control at a price of $1,372.75. Money for this specific item was not identified by a line item in the budget. Instead this item would be charged to Account #101-42210-01-439. This is the line of our budget which picks up miscellaneous items such as this which are being considered in the previous year but have not been specifically decided upon. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to authorize the fire department to spend $1,372.75 to purchase an 8 horsepower positive pressure fan from Hazard Control.
