This item is a request to spend $2,000 to send four of the eight applicants
we now have on file for doctor's physicals. In the past, the cost per
physical has run about $500.00.
Dr. Detlefsen is aware of those tests which are required for fire fighters.
I have met with him because I was concerned about the high costs. I had
hopes of cutting out some of the tests to reduce costs. I found that none
should be cut and in the future perhaps some should be added.
Later in the year if we are able to come in under budget in some other
area(s), I will be asking to overspend this category. This will be
necessary to replace those persons we have lost in 1990 and to begin to
enlarge the fire department. The number of calls are up and the demands
current fire fighter's free time is going up. Our numbers need to
increase, also. Because it takes two years to get new persons trained to
safe level of operation as a fire fighter, we need to increase as much as
possible now to operate effectively in the future.
The $2,000 has been budgeted for in 1991 in Account #101-42210-01-306 of
the operating budget.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Motion by city council to allow the fire department to send four
applicants for doctor's physicals at a cost of $2,000.
COUNCIL ACTION:
Approved.
