This item is a request to spend $4,300 during the course of 1991 to
train 25 of Rosemount's fire fighters to a hazardous materials level I
status. The exact direction the state plan is going to take has not been
determined as of yet. The only thing that has been determined is that
whatever type of a system is set up throughout the state or if we opt to
set our own system on a county wide basis or if we opt to contract with a
municipality such as St. Paul, the one thing we do know is that all of our
fire fighters will need to be trained to a level I response status. For
that reason, the Vo -Tech is gearing up and has hopes of offering the
classes to all fire fighters in Dakota County over the next 2 1/2 years.
Money was budgeted for a portion of our fire fighters to take these classes
during 1991. Hopefully monies will be available so the other portion of
the fire fighters will be able to take the classes in 1992. Some of the
classes will be starting as early as mid-February, with others to begin in
March, May and late summer. Because all the departments in the county are
trying to get their fire fighters into the various classes, I don't know
exactly how many will be scheduled for each class from Rosemount. If
monies are approved, as are being requested here, the 25 persons would be
taking classes at various times throughout 1991. We do have hopes of
bringing a class in to be taught at Rosemount in March so the bulk of our
expenditure could occur at that time.
The money for this training was budgeted for in 1991 in
Account $#101-42210-01-319.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Motion by city council to allow the fire department to spend up to
$4,300.00 to send 25 fire fighters to hazardous materials training
at various times throughout 1991.
COUNCIL ACTION:
Approved.
