This item is a request for authorization for the fire department to purchase a second
personal computer. Currently, the department has one IBM compatible PC with accessories
which was purchased four years ago. The second computer which we would like to add would
be a MacIntosh computer. Many of the computer programs which have been written for the
fire service along with haz-mat programs, have been written for the MacIntosh computer.
At the present time, the IBM computer is used extensively for word processing. The
MacIntosh computer would be used for word processing, database and spreadsheet
applications at the onset and would move into other more sophisticated fire programs as
they became available. Four years ago when we purchased our first computer it was used
solely by the secretary of the department. Now it is utilized by the secretary, the
training department, the membership department, and is also used to maintain records on
our vehicles. The added demand for the use of the computer, along with the flexibility a
second computer would provide, necessitates our request at the present time.
The suggested retail price for a system of this type is approximately $4,600. Government
pricing reduces that cost to approximately $2,400. The package we had been interested in
purchasing is listed as "Government Package AN below. We recently found out that if
purchased during September we could get "Government Promo Package B" which is basically
the same equipment with the substitution of a laser printer in place of the typical dot
matrix printer. The rebate which is offered with that package brings the price down so it
is almost the same cost with a much better printer. We see no reason not to spend the
extra $70.00 and get "Government Promo Package B".

Monies for this expenditure would be coming from two different areas. Approximately
$1,100 would be coming from our operating budget, Account 1101-42210-01-580. The
remaining $1,400 would come from money we have received in donations and have not expended
as of yet.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to authorize the fire department to spend
$2,483.90 to purchase a MacIntosh computer system with printer directly
from Apple Computers.
