Approve Expenditure for Mobile RadioCITY OF ROSEMOUNT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR ACTION CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: January 15, 1991 AGENDA ITEM: AGENDA SECTION: Expenditure/Mobile Radio Consent PREPARED BY: Scott AGENITEPIj ,fit 4 Aker, Fire Chief ATTACHMENTS: AP I B ,. Memo to Administrator Silk YVE v, U f/ This item is a request to spend $1,325.00 to purchase a Motorola Centaur -X mobile radio. According to the 1991 CIP we are anticipating replacing one of our officer's vehicles and that is where this radio is scheduled to be installed. The radio is being purchased ahead of the vehicle because the state bid is scheduled to expire which would raise the cost of the radio from the $1,325.00 to approximately $2,500.00. It is also anticipated that this radio will no longer be available once it goes off the state bid and becomes too expensive to purchase. The $1,325.00 is budgeted for and would be expended out of the 1991 budget from account 101-42210-01-323. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion by city council to allow the fire department to spend $1,325.00 to purchase a Motorola Centaur -X mobile radio. COUNCIL ACTION: Approved. ROSEMOUNT VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT ROSEMOUNT, MINNESOTA 55068 TO: Steve Jilk, City Administrator 11 FROM: Scott Aker, Fire Chief Uj DATE: December 17, 1990 RE: Expenditure/Mobile Radio As you are aware, over the past few years, the police and fire departments have standardized on a mobile radio. Both departments are now using a radio made by Motorola called the Centaur X. The fire department currently has five of these radios installed in our first line vehicles and I believe the police department has them also in most of the squad cars. I have recently been in contact with the distributor for Motorola and he has indicated that after the first of the year these radios will no longer be in production and Motorola will no longer have a radio on the state bid. He indicated that the reason the radio would no longer be in production was that this particular model was too expensive for Motorola to make and they were planning on going to a quote "cheaper" version of the same radio but because it was not on the state bid would ultimately cost more and operate slightly differently from the ones we now have. The fire department was planning on purchasing one of these radios for our assistant chief's new vehicle which is scheduled for early 1991. We do feel there is merit in having all of our radios the same and operating in pretty much the same manner. For this reason we would like to proceed and order one Motorola Centaur X radio at this time for $1,325.00 before they cease production on December 30, 1990. We have been guaranteed that parts and trained technicians would be available to work on them for quite some time into the future as there are so many of them in use at this time. I will also pass this information on to Chief Knutsen. I am not sure if he is aware of the situation and may want to take some action to keep his squads as standardized as possible, also. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. dw
