SUBJ: POLICE bEPARTMENT REMODEL
FEBRUARY 20, 1990 COUNCIL Af3ENDA ITEM #5h.
This information is being provided to brief new members of the
Council and update those originally informed of this project
lae last fali.
In order to provide some additional office space needed for
staff, we are going to eliminate the detention cells in the
Police Department by converting them into two affices. These
offices will be occupied by two of the police staff. The space
that is freed up by moving the police staff from their current
affice will then be used by the general administrative staff.
That will most likely be some of the Park Department staff. The
existing police office, which will be utilized by Park staff
will have the access from the Police Department secured and a
new dooxway cut in from the hallway.
I have submitted to you a copy of the plan sheet showing the
basic office glan.
We have received four bids on the project. These bids ranged
from $13, 300 to $17,869 . Since all of the bids exceeded the
$11,040 that was budgeted last year, they were all rjected.
I then had contact with each original bidder to see where the
price could be reduced. It was unanimously decided that
demolition was a big cost. Through negotiations with each one,
I received final bids from two of them. Ralph Hanson
Construction bid $10, 700 and Dosco/Johnson bid $9,86Q. Each
of them removed demolition, painting & staining and disposai
of construction debris from their original bids, This work
will be performed by eity crews .
The work included in the contract is installation of a window
in the exterior wall of one office, sheetrock/taping, floor
coverings, suspended ceiling, installation of three doors,
modification to electrical cireuits, modificatians to the
heating system and installation of conduits for computers.
I have been through the project plans several times and feel
that this is the best price we'll obtain. It is my
recommendation to award the contract to Dosco/Johnson. They
are a local contractor currntly licensed with the City.
If any of you would like further details, I would be happy to
provide it.
