Authorize Purchase of H�draulic Hose Couplinq Machine
This item consist of requesting approval to purchase a hydraulic hose
coupling machine using funds from the Public Works General Operating
Sudget. This memo will explain our reasons for wanting to purchase a
machine, the estimated cost and proposed funding.
The reason we are requesting the purchase of the hydraulic hose coupling
machine �.s to make hydraulic hose repairs more cost etfective and timely.
Last year we spent over $600. 00 for labor only far the repair of hydraulic
hoses. We are estimating the cost ot a hydraulic hose coupling machine to
be about $1, 100, thereby �eal.izing payback in about 2 years in labox cost
only.
Anoth�r factor i,nvolving hydraulic hose repair that can be mare critical
than cost is that af down-time. Unless our hydraulic hoses break during
normal business hours, we could end up with a piece of equipment down from
Friday night until Monday morning, which has happened, Even if the
hydraulic hose should break during the course of a normal business day the
repair time for the hose can be up to two hours. If we have this machine
and can perform these repairs on site we estimate it would take us 1/2 to
3/4 hours to remave the hose, repair and replace it. Not only would we be
able to service the Public Works equipment, but any Park or Fire Department
equipment that uses hydraulic hoses as well.
We propose to use the mandey budgeted in our Minor Equipment category. We
budgeted $6,750 for 1990. We have over $5,OOQ remaining ta date. We plan
to cut back on some mechanic tools purchases ($650) and wait until next
year to purchase a wheel caddie ($450) , a device to assist with the
changing of truck tires.
Recornmended action for Council to consider is to approve the purchase of
the hydraulic hose couplinq machine.
