Receive Bids/Authorize Purchase of Tractor/Mower/Sweeper Broom
On April 13 , 1990 we opened bids for a 4-wheel drive utility tractor with
cab, sweeper, wing and rear mower. Carlson Tractor & Equipment Company and
Scharber and Sons both submitted bids as you can see on the attached bid
tabulation. Both of these bids were above our budgets as the 1990 C.I.P.
had budgeted $31, 000 for the replacement of the tractor and mower and
$3 , 000 for the replacement of the sweeper broom. Adding these together
amounts to a total of $34, 000 to spend on this piece of equipment.
In order to meet our budgeted amount we feel we can get by for now without
purchasing the rear mower unit. I checked with both vendors and they both
indicated that the savings would be $3 , 000. Both vendors also indicated
that they would provide that to me in writing. With that reduction, the
Carlson Tractor and Equipment Company bid will come within budget while the
Scharber and Sons is still $600 over budget. However, in reviewing the
equipment bid it is our recommendations, which will be explained later,
that we purchase the unit from Scharber and Sons.
The reasons we are recommending purchasing the John Deere tractor and
accessory equipment from Scharber and Sons even though it is about $1, 500
more expensive than the Ford tractor and accessories from Carlson Tractor,
is as follows:
1. The John Deere has 10 more horsepower.
2 . The John Deere has more hydraulic pumping capacity (21 gpm vrs. 8. 5
gPm) •
3 . The John Deere 3 point hitch will lift more weiqht (3269 lbs. vrs.
3080 lbs. ) .
4 . The John Deere cab is quieter (76.5 dba vrs. 81 dba) .
5. The John Deere has a shorter turning radius (13 . 5 ' vrs. 15 ' ) .
6. The Tiger mower has a bigger gear box, larger oil tank, more pumping
capacity, stronger bearings, higher hour ratings and thicker metal.
7. The Tiger broom is much easier to take off and install.
8 . The Tiger mower is easier to remove.
Both dealers have parts and service available in town. Even though
Scharber and Sons submitted the bid, Corcoran Hardware has the ability to
