Dakota County Emergency Services
Ref: Ingestion Exposnre Pathway Response i
The Ingestion pathway planning provides methods for protecting the I
general public from consumption of foods and drinking water contaminated I
with radioactivity which may be released during a nuclear plant I
accident. The State Departments of Health and Agriculture have the I
primary responsibility for this task.
The ingestion pathway emergency planning zone (EPZ) extends for 50 miles
around the
nuclear plants to include all food production, processing and ,
marketing facilities (See attached map) . ;
On May 15 & 16, 1990, Dakata, Goodhue and Washington Counties, along I
with the States of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and Nothern States Po.+er I
Nuclear Plant at Prairie Island will be conducting a Federal Evaluated
full scale exercise. The Scenario is calling for a large amount af I
simulated release of radibaetive gases to drive the ingestion pathway I
exposure response. Depending an the wind direction and speed on those I
two days, I cauld be calling departments and advising you to simulate i
notifying your residents to take shelter or even evacuate the area.
Additionally, there might be survey teams with radfolagical monitoring '
kits checking for hot spots in your cities. They will be from the State '
Nealth and Agriculture Department and have the appropriate
identification. You may want to review the section of your plan that
deals with evacuation Annex F. T want you to know that this unigue ',
exercise is very fantastic. The Piant cauld not produce that type of
release. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) however is '
mandating the exercise. '
If you have any questions please call me at 438-4703
