I contacted the Counselor at St. Paul T.V.I. regarding the internship
program they have for civil technicians. This internship program is
mandatory for the student to graduate as a civil engineering
technician. The internship program is a three month program that
begins in June 1991, but because the students classes don't begin
again until December 1991 it is possible for that student to work at
this internship program until that period. Realistically this would
be a six month type of program.
The program has no cost associated to the employer, however most
employers end up paying the interns for the work that they do for
them. The rate is based upon the type of task they perform.
I had requested an additional engineering technician in the 1991
budget, but because of the budget situation that request was dropped.
Instead, an engineering intern position was requested at 1-1/4 the
cost. This intern position would be responsible for basically data
entry to combine our record plan information on streets and utilities
with the County's GIS informational data base. I would anticipate
keeping one person busy on this project all year.
