RE: ITEM FOR THE JULY 17 . 1990 COtJNCIL MEETING
NEW BUSINESS
Approve Maintenance I Position/Authorize Advertisement for Mechanic I
Position
This memo consist of asking Council to authorize the filling of a Mechanic
I position because of a vacancy created because our existing Mechanic I is
transferring to the Maintenance I position. This memo provides some
background to this situation and also recommended action for Council to take,
with your approval.
In 1989 we established a Leve1 II Maintenance position to work in the
utilities area (water and sewer) . One of our existing employees, Mr.
Korpela, held the Maintenance I position with us and applied for this
position. After successfully completing the necessary testing and obtaining
the necessary certifications last fa11, Mr. Korpela was selected to fill this
new position. I am pleased to inform you that Mr. Korpela has successfully
fulfilled this position. It was our intention not to fi11 the Maintenance
I position until Mr. Korpelas' probationary period was satisfactorily
completed.
I posted the opening for the Maintenance I position last week. Mr.
Barfknecht, our Mechanic I, applied for this position as he wishes to
transfer into the maintenance end of our activities. Although the move is
purely lateral from a financial standpoint, Mr. Barfknecht has expressed a
great deal of interest in working outside in the street and utility
maintenance fieids. I feel that Mr. Barfknecht is qualified
for this position and would recommend that he fill this position.
This leaves us with an opening for a Mechanic I. I would request your
approval to have Council authorize the filling of this position and
advertising in the local paper for qualified candidates to apply. I am
attaching a job description for reference. The job description has some
revisions I would propose be incorporated.
Recommended action I would request Council to take is to approve of Mr.
Barfknecht filling the Maintenance I position and authorizing the
advertisement for filling the vacant Mechanic I position.
