RE: ITErt FOR THE JULY 18, 1989 COUNCIL MEETING I
OLD BUSINESS
Portable Hoist/Lift Puxchase
As Councilman Walsh requested last meeting, we looked into the cost of a truck
lift to replace our existing broken hoist. A truck ],ift would cost about $5,940,
which is less than a portable hoist. However, there axe several reasons at this
tirne we don't feel a truck lift would make the most sense to purchase at this
time. These reasons are:
1. Lack of heated storage room-we have not been able to find a truck lift
with the portabilitg features of the vehicle hoist we are requesting to
purchase. If we install the permanent truck lift, we would be losing
some valuable heated storage space in the mechanies bay area. The
portable space takes up very little room and can be moved from place to
place,
2. Lack of need-we don't haue the time or equipment to be ahle to perform
any other functions on our large trucks that would require a truck
lift. For example, maintenance or repair on trucks that our crew would
do that would require a lift would include transmission or differential
work. At this time we feel it is more advantageous to send that work
out to specialized truck repair facilities rather than do it in-house.
We are more likely to do work on the wheels, such as brake work, wheel
bearing packing, tire removal, etc. These basically can be
accomplished by hydraulic jacks and stationary jacks.
I asked our° mch'anics whether or not they could change an exhaust system using
the portable lift. There repiy was that they had already done so and it worked
quite nicely.
I hope I have addressed all of Councils concerns regarding the purchase of this
lift. I realize that it appears expensive in relation to permanent stationary
lifts, but it also offers much mor ver a '

I wou l d like to remind Council that this item would be necessary euen if we had a
new faeility with a stationary lift because we often have need to make
unscheduled maintenance and repairs to police and other public works vehieles
while the mechanic has a certain piece of equipment under repair in the area
where the permanent lift would be.
Recommended action for Council to consider is to approve the use of $6,300 from
the 1989 C.I.P. excess funds to purchase portable vehicle lift.
