�: Purchase of Slit Seeded / Thatcher
The sma.11 tools portion of the Parks & Recreation budget for 1989
listed under account number I01 - 45110 - 2241 has $3,500.00 for
purchases. Items such as skidster equipment, chain saws, etc. are
examples of items that would be purchased from this account. '

This piece of equipment will be used in the parks system for:
1. aeration - cutting of small soil plugs that loosen the soil and
allow for plant root systems to more easily expand / this
will not totally replace the need for aeration with. a
machine that removes ].arger plugs that we use at least
twice each year in the parks maintenance programs
2. thatcher - loosen the cut grass and the heavy uncut grass from
around the plant to allow for moisture, sun light, and
nutrients to be absorbs more easily by the plant
3. sZit seed -the blades cut through the present turf to allow for seed
to fall through the slits cut in the soil for glanting - �
this allows for over seeding of the turf to add to the
ma.intenance process
The slit seeder portion of the equipment will be used to help in the
repair of the drought damage of the summer of 1988. Weed ki11 each
season ha.s also added to the need for reseeding of the park areas. The
use of the slit seeder allows for keeping the remaining grass and qet
to plant seed below the surface for higher percentage of grass growth.
The present grass w311 serve as a cover and no additional mulch is
required in the planting process.
Zhree tyges of slit seeders were quoted. Each of these products had
only one distributor in our area. For that reason we asked each
distributor to quote their product and we have evaluated those quotes.
