ROSEMUN. iNNFSOTA 55068OSGYOuY 612 423-4411 January 15, 1988 TO: Mayor Hoke Councilmembers Napper Oxborough Walsh Wippermann FROM: Stephan Jilk, Administrator/Clerk RE: Public Works - Mechanic Position Pursuant to the City Council's acceptance of the resignation of Bennie Hotvedt, Rich Hefti has provided job descriptions for this position. Under the existing labor contract, the mechanic position is not a separate position but is covered under the "Maintenance I, II, & III" positions. Bennie filled a III slot. It is our recommendation that "Mechanic I, II, and III" positions be established with the pay range the same as Maintenance I,II, and III. Specifying Mechanic slot rather than covering the position with a general maintenance slot will enable the city to fill the slot with a person who, by -,definition, will be qualified. Unless we revise the maintenance job descriptions to specifically cover mechanic work, experience and ability, we cannot guarantee getting qualified people and would have to seriously consider our existing maintenance personnel for the slot who would not be qualified for the "experienced mechanic" need we have. Also, as the city grows, our need for initially a qualified mechanic, then additional mechanics will become evident. We see this as the opportunity to set that direction. We have met with the union, and they have agreed to proceed with putting this into the contract which is necessary. Copies of the revised pages of the contract are attached. Approval by the Council is necessary to (1) approve the job descriptions as proposed and (2) authorize the amendment to the contract to have the revisions made. I recommend both of these. smj Attachments LABOR AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY OF ROSEMOUNT AND MINNESOTA TEAMSTERS PUBLIC AND LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEES' UNION, LOCAL NO. 320 (PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT) JANUARY 1, 1986 - DECEMBER 31, 1988 REVISED DECEMBER 15, 1987 REVISED JANUARY 19, 1988 APPENDIX "A" SALARY SCHEDULE A.
