Handicap Access Project / Approve FundingDATE: MARCH 31, 1988 TO: MAYOR & COUNCILMEMBERS C/O, ADMINISTRATOR JILK FROM: CITY ENGINEER/PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR HEFTI RE: ITEMS FOR APRIL 5, 1988 COUNCIL MEETING NEW BUSINESS Handicap Access Project/Approve Funding The Public Works and Parks department have been working closely for about a year to put together a project that would provide sidewalk access to all existing park shelters. This project also included removing the existing grass area around the tennis court in Charlies' Park and replacing it with concrete. Because of the fence around the tennis court it is difficult and time consuming to maintain the grass within .the.fenced area. That is,why we are proposing to replace it with concrete. I went out for quotations for this work and received two. One from Alexander Construction in the amount of $15,730 and the other from CurbMasters, Inc. in the amount of $8,680. I have a letter from CurbMasters indicating that they are interested in doing the work at the unit prices they bid, which amounted to $1.35 per square foot. This cost is an excellent bargain for the City that I do not feel we can pass up, The main reason the contractor is willing to perform this work at such bargain price is because he needs the work this spring to keep his crews working until the majority of concrete work starts up this summer. I am requesting that Council authorize the use of some of the $19,220 excess we have that resulted from the difference we budgeted in the 1988 C.I.P. for the new street sweeper and the actual purchase price. I would'like'to have Council authorize up to $10,000 of this money to be used for this project. I would dike this contractor to perform some additional work, that being the installation of a concrete valley gutter across the entrance to the east city hall parking lot and the south entrance of the public works garage; and also replace a curb cut leading to Lift Station #1 with barrier type curb. In addition to the handicap access ramp we need to construct in the east parking lot, I am aware of another that needs to be constructed on 145th Street and Chianti. If Council has any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me at Councils convenience.
