Authorize Feasibility Report/1988 Sidewalk Replacement, Project #186
Last year the Public Works Department surveyed the existing concrete sidewalk
situation in the City. The result of this survey is that there is about 9,000
square feet of sidewalk in very poor condition. The recommended corrective
measures would be mud jacking and complete replacement.
Mud jacking could be used successfully in areas where there is differential
settling between sidewalk panels. The lower slab can be raised to meet the grade
of the adjacent slab thereby removing a'potential liability of someone catching
the edge of the slab and falling. The other problems with the sidewalks are
generally located at driveways where the concrete is spalling (peeling and
chipping) or severe pitting has occurred. This is generally the result of
reaction with the salt, that is dragged off the City streets in the winter time,
and the concrete that has occurred over many years. This, as with the areas
where this concrete is badly cracked, needs to be removed and replaced.
I would like Council to authorize Staff to prepare a feasibility report on the
condition of the existing sidewalk, the appropriate correction methods, and
estimated cost.
We should be able to return the feasibility report for Councils information by
May 3, 1988. If Council has any questions or concerns regarding this proposed
project, please feel free to contact me at Councils convenience.
