Chili/Chippendale Intersection, School District ResponseDATE: MAY 12, 1988 TO: MAYC R & CAUNCIL EMBERS C/O ADMINISTRATOR JILK FROM: CITY IIVGIlqEER/PUBLIC WCRKS DIRECTM ISI RE: ITEMS FM MAY 17, 1988 CXJUNC'IL MEENING Chili/Chippendale Intersection, School District Response For Councils information, Steve Jilk, Dean Johnson, Glen Van Warmer from our Consultants and I met with Dick Dewey, John Hansom and Tan Wilson of the School District regarding the School District potential involvement with this project. The two issues we discussed were funding and alternate bus muting. The School District indicated that while they recognized the traffic problems associated with the intersection are compounded by bus and school traffic they cannot legally expend any School District funds for off-site improvements. The School District can rnly assist in the funding of public roads if the public roads are adjacent or through School District property. We also discussed the possibility of re-routing some bus traffic. One example would be to bring the buses frau Eagan and northern Apple Valley across County Road 38 to Highway 3 and then into the school rather than having them cone down Pilot Knob Road to Diamond Path to 145th Street and having to make a left hand turn at Chili. The evening southbound buses could be routed out to Highway 3 to County Road 42 ratty than using Chili and having to take a left on Chippendale. There is no action for Council to take at this time. This item is basically for Councils information. Staff will continue working with the School District to attempt to mitigate as much of the traffic congestion as possible. We will have a slight reprieve in about two years when the School District transfers about 800 students to the new Eagan High School. Horner, the problem will not go away because of the continued growth in the City which will in turn begin replacing the lost student population that was lost to Eagan.
