Fire Station Stucco Project, City Contract #1988-3DATE JUNE 16, 198$ TO: MAYOR & COUNCILMEMBERS C/O ADMINISTRATOR JILK FROM: CITY ENGINEER/PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR HEFTI RE: ITEMS FOR JUNE 21, 1988 COUNCIL MEETING OLD BUSINESS Reject for Contract 1988-3, Fire Hall Exterior Modifications Staff is recommending that Council reject the three bids that we received for the fire hall exterior modifications for the following two reasons. First, the bids received all exceed our budgeted and estimated cost. There is $41,000 in the 1988 budget to cover this work. Secondly, there was a mix-up between the bid opening dates. Our architect advertised a bid opening at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13, while City Council approved a bid opening at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 16. We received two bids on Monday and one bid on Thursday. Because of these two reasons, Staff is recommending that Council rejects these bids and authorize a new bid opening at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 1988. Meanwhile, the architect will modify the specifications to attempt to reduce the cost to bring them in line with our budgeted amount. According to the bidders some areas of the specifications could be modified to reduce costs and yet not compromise the quality of this project. One example was that the heavy duty nylon meshing that the stucco is applied onto could be substituted with a little lighter duty meshing and save about $3,000. For Councils information, our City Attorney is also recommending that we re -bid this project.
