RE: Fire Department Clothing Purchase
Gentlemen
The field inspectorfrom O.S.H.A. has inspected the fire department
building, equipment, clothing and training schedules. The only citation
issued from this inspection was on the type of coats worn by the
firefighters entering structure fires.
Because of regulations passed by the federal government pertaining to
clothing worn by firefighters, the coats our department has do not meet
standards. The regulation pertains to the ability of the coat to allow
moisture out but not in during fire suppression work.
The department was given six months to replace these coats with ones
meeting O.S.HA. standards.
This dill require the purchase of 20 new coats.' Bob Turek has received
quotations on these coats, and the best price is $199.50 each. These
list for $285 each. Delivery time would be three to four months from
order date.
Because we must meet OSHA standards, and we want to keep the safety of
our firefighters in mind at all times, I recommend we approve the
purchase of these twenty coats.
The purchase cost then would be $3,990 for twenty Body Guard Custom 7,5
ounce nomex fire turn out coats form Clarey's Safety Equipment, Inc. of
Rochester, MN,
Though Bob Turek had budgeted $2,000 for clothing replacement in 1987,
it was for normally scheduled replacement of boots and pants; not the
coats. Therefore, this would be a special approval by you for these
items.
Respe tfully,
Stehan Jilk
