RE: Fire Department Officers Salaries
At the December 1 meeting a proposal and recommendation for adjustments
to fire department officers salaries was presented. This was sent back
to the fire department to get membership approval prior to your
approving it in order to follow City Code requirements as set out in
City Code Chapter 2, Section 6-2-1.D.
The fire department membership has considered these adjustments and is
recommending their approval. I have received the minutes from their
meeting on this. There are no changes from what was recommended on
December 1, 1987.
Also, the department has considered another matter which would require
another specific wage payment approval. As the department's equipment
expands in numbers, the need for mechanical servicing and maintenance
increases. Some of the work done on this equipment in the past has been
completed by Bennie Hotvedt. Some has been done by fire department
personnel. Some has been hired out to local mechanics. The department,
along with public works, is experiencing a lack of needed work getting
done because of not having enough time available.
What is proposed in to utilize fire department members who are certified
mechanics and would have time available to.complete service work on fire
department equipment. It is further recommended that a "mechanic's"
rate be set at $15.00/hour and be paid, on authorization and direction
of the chief,to personnel he chooses to have complete the work.
It is felt that actual costs will be reduced for service on the
vehicles, better control and scheduling can be maintained for vehicle
service and the fire department will have better control on the service
of the vehicles.
The request for approval of salaries for the fire department would then
include those recommended on December 1 (attached), and a rate of
$15.00/hour for a "fire department mechanic's" position.
I recommend this approval be given.
