ISSUE
The City recently advertised for the position of Public Works Director / City Engineer to fill the vacancy
left by the departure of the previous director. The position was advertised in the five-state area and a total
of 14 applications were received from across the country. Upon review of the applicants, 8 individuals
were asked to participate in an initial interview. The first interview panel consisted of Dan Schultz, Jackie
Berg, Jim Koslowski, John Morast, and Logan Martin. Three finalists were invited back for a final
interview on June 2, which included a meet and greet with staff & Council, a facilities / City tour, an
informal discussion with Public Works staff members, and a panel interview. The perspectives of all staff
that participated in the process were discussed and considered. Finalists also completed the “Insights”
personality profile that was completed by Council and staff earlier this year, and those results were also
considered in our final decision.
As a result of this thorough process, staff is pleased to recommend Mr. Brian Erickson be hired as the
City’s next Public Works Director / City Engineer. Mr. Erickson is currently the Public Works Director /
City Engineer for Mounds View, and was previously the Assistant Director in Northfield for ten years.
Mr. Erickson has an impressive list of professional accomplishments and comes highly regarded by all
individuals that we spoke with.
Mr. Erickson is a licensed P.E. and holds a Master’s in Structural Engineering from the University of
Maryland, along with a Bachelor’s in Engineering Science from Iowa State University. Mr. Erickson is a
retired Commander in the US Navy’s Civil Engineer Corp.
He lives south of Northfield and his anticipated start date is July 17, 2017. The background check process,
which also includes a medical exam and a drug test, is anticipated to be complete before the Council
meeting.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Council approve the hiring of Brian Erickson for the position of Public Works
Director/City Engineer.
