ISSUE
At the last meeting, staff reviewed the Greater MSP Dashboard and the group discussed providing
some “snapshot” information specifically about Rosemount. Currently there is a dashboard on the
City of Rosemount website, http://www.ci.rosemount.mn.us/570/Dashboard , which has some of
the information staff would recommend using for economic development purposes. Along with
housing permits issues and building permit valuation, staff is also recommending the following
information be placed on the ED dashboard:
Total population (or households)
Percent growth in community
Percent of adults in labor force
Median household income
Percent of adults with Bachelor’s degree or higher (or Associates or higher)
Households within in a 3- or 5-mile radius**
Size of population age 18+ (proxy value for workforce size)
Median housing value
Average travel time to work
Most of the information available for these measures comes on an annual basis, through the Census
data. The Federal Government provides the American Community Survey every year, which would
be the basis for most of the above information. The household number within a geographic range
would be obtained through the use of GIS, and building permit data is generated by the City on a
monthly basis. For purposes of this exercise, staff is trying to limit the information to that which is
germane to industrial and commercial locational decision-making; the city-wide dashboard will
provide information to community residents. The above information addresses questions about
workforce, growth, and community investment, all areas of interest to businesses when making
location decisions.
