RECOMMENDED ACTION: Provide direction to Staff regarding City Council
Compensation.
BACKGROUND
Some discussion has occurred among the Council regarding potential modifications to the Council’s
compensation. State law requires that compensation adjustments for elected officials be done via
ordinance amendment during an election year, and any adjustment cannot be effective until the following
year (so as to not benefit current elected officials).
The Mayor is currently paid $9,200 annually and Councilmembers are paid $7,000 annually. These rates
were last modified in 2014, effective January 2015. Attached is a document showing the history of
compensations adjustments for the Mayor and Council dating back to 1989.
Similar to discussions surrounding employee compensation, a comparison of wages from neighboring
cities is a logical action. Attached is a spreadsheet listing Mayor / Council compensation from Dakota
County cities as of 2016, and this data can be updated if necessary. Also attached is a spreadsheet of data
from cities with populations from 20,000 – 35,000.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff requests that the Council discuss the need for a compensation adjustment, to be effective January
2019, and direct staff on next steps.
