RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve Change Order #2 for the Flint Hills Athletic
Complex project.
ISSUE
The second phase of improvements are currently under construction at the Flint Hills Athletic Complex.
As you recall, the improvements are to include four new green fields, sun shelter, trails, parking lot, access
road, and landscaping.
The playground structure and playground infrastructure were not part of the original project that was
recently bid. It has been staff’s plan to install the playground once all of the major construction work is
complete and the fields are nearly ready for play. Because the contractor is currently on site with much of
the equipment needed to prepare the site for the future playground, staff asked the contractor to provide a
cost for the additional work. Staff finds that it would be more cost effective to do the work now with the
project versus coming back at a later date to complete the work.
The contractor on the project has submitted a change order for $70,092.10 to perform the work that
would include excavation, fine grading, ADA trail connections, sidewalks, playground perimeter, additional
landscaping and other minor improvements needed to prepare the site for the future playground. Staff
expects that the playground structure will go through the RFP process in 2019 and be installed in 2020.
Due to the highly competitive bids received for this project, funds are available in the project fund to
cover this change order.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff is recommending the City Council approve Change Order #2 for the Flint Hills Athletic Complex
project in the amount of $70, 092.10.
