ISSUE
Veda Kanitz, a teacher at Rosemount High School (RHS), and two students from RHS presented
information to the Parks and Recreation Commission regarding climate change at our meeting in May. The
Commission discussed the different resolution documents and asked that staff bring back a resolution that
is similar to the Red Wing, MN resolution of support. Staff has created the resolution as requested.
It was also discussed if the City's Environmental and Sustainability Task Force will be taking action on this
topic and they have yet to do so.
Staff is requesting the Commission discuss the draft resolution that has been included in the packet and
provide direction to staff on moving this forward.
CITY OF ROSEMOUNT
DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ROSEMOUNT
ENDORSING ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
WHEREAS, the costs of climate change — including destabilized weather patterns, rising sea levels,
extreme weather events, and other serious impacts — now pose a substantial threat to the health,
prosperity, and security of Americans; and
WHEREAS, the costs are real, they are growing, and they are already burdening businesses, tax
payers, municipal budgets and families; and
WHEREAS, prudent action now will be far less costly than the consequences of delayed response
and will create a more stable business environment for our nation.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF ROSEMOUNT, that the City
Council of the City of Rosemount urges Congress to sponsor and/or support measures that will
acknowledge the serious threat posed by climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a
clear, transparent, and effective way.
ADOPTED this XX day of September, 2018.
