RECOMMENDED ACTION: Discussion/CIP Item to Purchase and Replace Motorola
Portable Radios
BACKGROUND
The Council is asked to consider the replacement of the current Motorola handheld portable radios. The
Fire Department has been utilizing their current portable radios for 12 years and the radios are their lifeline
when they are inside of hazardous situations. The Department is currently using Motorola 5000 and 2500
versions of handheld radios, both of which are being phased out by Motorola in 2018/2019.
The Department currently has 34 portable radios deployed in fire vehicles and assigned to chief officer
positions. As part of this process, we received a bid quote from Ancom Communications to replace half
of the portable radio fleet this year with the hopes of replacing the other half in early 2019 to get the best
pricing. The bid quote also contains the needed accessories for the portable radios that include chargers
and spare batteries. The quote that was received came in at $66,198.92 and it should be noted that this
quote is quoted at the state bid contract pricing.
This expenditure is noted in the 2019 CIP and the quote received is within the CIP budget amount. The
Rosemount Fire Department has been utilizing Ancom for many years as they are located in Burnsville
and have provided great service.
