New Police Commander Oath and Introduction - Dahlstrom Commander Appointment E X E C U T I V E S U M M A R Y City Council Regular Meeting: January 2, 2019 AGENDA ITEM: New Police Commander Oath of Office and Introduction AGENDA SECTION: Presentations PREPARED BY: Mitchell Scott, Chief of Police AGENDA NO. 3.a. ATTACHMENTS: None APPROVED BY: LJM RECOMMENDED ACTION: None BACKGROUND In 2013, the Police Department’s lieutenant retired and it was determined not to fill the position to allow the newly promoted sergeants to gain greater experience and knowledge as first line supervisors. Over the last four years, the sergeants have grown as leaders. Seeing the growth and progression of the sergeants, it was determined it was time to promote a sergeant to the rank of commander to allow the department to have a true second in command. The Police Department recently completed an extensive testing process for the Commander position. Sergeant Mikael Dahlstrom was selected to fill the Commander position and he started his duties today, January 2, 2019. Commander Dahlstrom was hired by the Rosemount Police Department on September 5, 2006 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant on August 23, 2013. He has served as a patrol officer, South Metro S.W.A.T. team leader, and patrol sergeant as well as the sergeant of investigations and the administrative sergeant. After high school, Commander Dahlstrom attended St. Thomas University where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Philosophy. In addition, he received a Master’s Degree in Leadership in Criminal Justice from Concordia University. In 2018, Commander Dahlstrom attended the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, graduating with top honors. We are excited to have Commander Dahlstrom take on his new role as the first Commander with the Rosemount Police Department.
