Replacement of Motorola Portable Radios EXECUTIVE SUMMARY City Council Meeting: February 5, 2019 AGENDA ITEM: Replacement of Motorola Portable Radios AGENDA SECTION: Consent PREPARED BY: Rick Schroeder, Fire Chief AGENDA NO. 6.g. ATTACHMENTS: Bid Quotes from Ancom and Collins APPROVED BY: LJM RECOMMENDED ACTION: Discussion/CIP Item to Purchase and Replace Motorola Portable Radios BACKGROUND In November of 2018, the Fire Department replaced 17 Motorola handheld radios, which was half of their handheld radios. The Council is asked to consider the expenditure to replace the other 17 Motorola handheld portable radios. The Fire Department has been utilizing their current portable radios for over 20 years and the radios are considered their lifeline when they are inside of hazardous situations. At the end of 2019, Motorola will no longer be making replacement parts for the current radios and will no longer be able to repair the radios. As part of this process, they received a bid quote from Ancom Communications to replace half of the portable radio fleet in 2018 and to replace the other half in 2019 at the same price. The bid quote also contains the needed accessories for the portable radios that include chargers and spare batteries. The quoted fee is $66,198.92, and it should be noted that this is the state bid contract pricing. The purchase of these additional radios will allow us to put all of the new radios in service at the same time which will reduce confusion, programming and training issues. This expenditure is noted in the 2019 CIP and the quote received is within the CIP budget amount. The Rosemount Fire Department has been utilizing Ancom for many years as they are located in Burnsville and have provided great service. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends City Council authorization to purchase the equipment as recommended in the report.
