SUMMARY Minnesota Valley Transit Authority provides essential transportation services to residents and employees in Rosemount and six neighboring communities. Next week, MVTA will participate in a challenge to commuters in its service area. During the “Get on Board Commuter Challenge,” participants who alter their commutes will be eligible for prizes provided by local business partners. Participants can qualify by using public transit, bicycles, carpools, walking, or telecommuting. The goal is to draw more people to sample these alternative forms of commuting at least once during the week. By doing so, they may be more inclined to use these alternatives in the future. The full details of the Challenge are available on the agency’s website, www.mvta.com. The challenge will run from Monday, April 22, to Sunday, April 28. That will include the day of April 25, which has been declared “National Get on Board Day.” RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends the Council approve a proclamation naming April 25, 2019 as National Get on Board Day. 2 PROCLAMATION Whereas, April 25, 2019, marks National Get on Board Day, a day to showcase the benefits and build support for public transportation, as public transit offers economic opportunity and powers community growth by driving economic development and revitalizing neighborhoods; and April 22-28 marks Minnesota Valley Transit Authority’s first Get on Board Commuter Challenge in Rosemount; and Whereas, Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns; and Whereas, Public transportation is a $71 billion industry that directly employs 420,000 people and supports millions of private sector jobs; and Whereas, Eighty-seven percent of public transit trips directly affect the economy by connecting people to jobs or retail and entertainment venues; Now, Therefore, The Rosemount City Council declares that Rosemount will join with public transportation systems across the country and participate in National Get on Board Day and MVTA’s commuter challenge, by showcasing the benefits and building support for public transportation; and That Rosemount declares that public transportation is an important part of our nation’s transportation system and provides citizens with travel options; and That Rosemount declares that public transportation, helps people save money, helps the environment, and improves America’s quality of life; and Further proclaims that Rosemount participate in National Get on Board Day and the Get on Board Commuter Challenge.
