Police Officer Oath of Office - Kaiser EXECUTIVE SUMMARY City Council Regular Meeting: October 15, 2019 AGENDA ITEM: Police Officer Oath of Office AGENDA SECTION: Presentation PREPARED BY: Mikael Dahlstrom Chief of Police AGENDA NO. 3.a. ATTACHMENTS: Oath of Office APPROVED BY: LJM RECOMMENDED ACTION: Administer the Oath of Office to Dan Kaiser. BACKGROUND Following several retirements in early 2019, the Department initiated a hiring process to hire four police officers. Officer Dan Kaiser grew up in Apple Valley and graduated from Eastview High School. After high school, Dan attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he began studying business and science with initial thoughts of becoming an actuary. While Dan has earned enough college credits to earn beyond a bachelor’s degree, he did not feel fulfilled with this career path, so he made the switch to law enforcement. While speaking with Dan about his path to law enforcement, he remembered he was drawn to the variability and unpredictable nature of the profession. Moreover, after going on a ride-along with a friend of his parents, he was drawn to the profession knowing he was going to be helping others in different ways each day. Dan will be the first police officer in his entire extended family. Dan joined our department in 2017 as a Community Service Officer. Since that time, Dan has been attending Normandale Community College and earned an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement. Of note, Dan only has one semester remaining for a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Throughout his time with our Department, Dan has made the decision to promote him to police officer an easy one. Not only does he consistently exceed the expectations and requirements set for a Community Service Officer, he comes to work with steadfast character, self-initiative, and a willingness to help wherever he is able. Recently, Dan volunteered to organize our Department’s involvement with the Minnesota Special Olympics Torch Run. He recruited officers to run, fundraised via clothing sales, and acted as a reliable liaison to the Special Olympics staff before helping carry the torch through Rosemount for over four miles in uniform. When not working, Dan enjoys working out, riding his motorcycle, playing video games, and snowboarding. Dan’s father owns a small business, his mother is a teacher, and he has a brother who currently resides in California. We feel fortunate and lucky to continue to have Dan on our team as he is promoted to the position of police officer!
