BACKGROUND Since the mid 1980’s, America has celebrated July as the nation's official Parks and Recreation month. Staff is asking the City Council to proclaim the month of July as Parks and Recreation Month in Rosemount. The City’s parks and open space areas ensure the ecological beauty of our community and provide a place for children and adults to connect with nature and recreate outdoors. The City’s park system consists of 30 parks totaling 542 acres. The City has 40 miles of trails and 61 miles of sidewalk that connect our community. The Parks and Recreation Department also offers a variety of recreation programming for all ages and a variety of facilities. Whether it is a senior card game, safety camp or skating at the ice rink, staff in the department help to keep people moving. Over 70 regular, part-time and seasonal staff are employed by the Parks and Recreation Department. Our staff understand that parks and recreation are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life in our communities. They strive day in and day out to do their best and work with residents to help them gain better access to facilities, parks, trails and open spaces. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends the City Council proclaim the month of July as Parks and Recreation Month in Rosemount. PROCLAMATION WHEREAS parks and recreation programs are an integral part of communities throughout this country, including Rosemount; and WHEREAS our parks and recreation are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life in our communities, ensuring the health of all citizens, and contributing to the economic and environmental well-being of a community and region; and WHEREAS parks, recreation activities, and leisure experiences provide opportunities for young people to live, grow and develop into contributing members of society, and create lifetime and continuous life experiences for older members of the community; and WHEREAS parks and recreation programs increase a community’s economic prosperity through increased property values, expansion of the local tax base, increased tourism, the attraction and retention of businesses, and crime reduction; and WHEREAS parks and recreation areas are fundamental to the environmental well-being of our community; and WHEREAS parks and natural recreation areas improve water quality, protect groundwater, prevent flooding, provide vegetative buffers to development, and produce habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS our parks and natural recreation areas ensure the ecological beauty of our community and provide a place for children and adults to connect with nature and recreate outdoors; and WHEREAS Rosemount recognizes the benefits derived from parks and recreation resources Now, Therefore, I, William Droste, Mayor of Rosemount Minnesota, do hereby proclaim July as Parks and Recreation Month in the City of Rosemount.
