EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
City Council Regular Meeting: July 21, 2020
AGENDA ITEM: City Council Compensation AGENDA SECTION:
Consent
PREPARED BY: Logan Martin, City Administrator AGENDA NO.: 6.d.
ATTACHMENTS: Draft Ordinance APPROVED BY: LJM
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to Approve the Ordinance Amending Salaries and
Compensation for Mayor and Councilmembers for the City of Rosemount.
BACKGROUND
State law requires that compensation adjustments for elected officials be done prior to the election this year,
and that any adjustment cannot be effective until the following year (Jan. 1, 2021).
During even numbered years beginning in 2018, the salaries shall be reviewed for possible COLA
adjustments with an effective date of the following January. Any proposed salary adjustment for the
Mayor and Councilmembers must be approved by ordinance of the City Council (attached).
The Council has not received a salary adjustment since 2018. As such, staff is recommending that the
Council receive the same cost of living increase as the non-union employees receive, on an every other year
basis due to the aforementioned law. With a 3% increase for 2020, the Mayor’s salary would increase from
$9,200 to $9,453/year and the Councilmembers’ salaries would go from $7,210 to $7,408/year.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends approval of the Ordinance Amending Salaries and Compensation for Mayor and
Councilmembers for the City of Rosemount.
