RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve the receipt of $750 from the AAA
Minnesota/Iowa Traffic Safety Grant and approve expenditure of those funds on costs on
equipment related to commercial vehicle inspection and/or enforcement
BACKGROUND
In October of this year, the Police Department applied for a traffic safety grant through the American
Automobile Association (AAA) to assist with costs relating to commercial vehicle
inspection/enforcement. The Department’s application was approved, and AAA awarded $750 to the
Department.
The Department, along with many other agencies in Dakota County have seen an increase in commercial
vehicle-related incidents. Our agency has responded to numerous fatal and serious injury crashes directly
related to commercial vehicles. In addition, officers have received complaints regarding other enforceable
violations (i.e. engine braking noise, leaky loads, etc.) Due to this increase, Dakota County law
enforcement agencies have partnered with other local and state agencies in order to enforce laws related to
commercial vehicles.
The funds would be used to help with costs (i.e. equipment) associated with starting and maintaining a
Commercial Vehicle Inspection program within our agency. It is our goal to reduce the number of
Commercial Vehicle incidents within the City of Rosemount and Dakota County. The AAA traffic safety
grant program has been a consistent contributor to traffic safety efforts in our City and County.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends Council approve the receipt and expenditure of the $750 received via the AAA Traffic
Safety grant.
