Action Items & Issues List EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Utility Commission Meeting: March 22, 2021 AGENDA SECTION: AGENDA ITEM: Action Items / Issues List Executive Director’s Report PREPARED BY: Brian Erickson, P.E. Director of Public Works AGENDA NO. 8.c. / City Engineer ATTACHMENTS: APPROVED BY: BLE RECOMMENDED ACTION: None, informational only BACKGROUND Utility Commissioners requested that staff provide updates on the following items for meetings going forward.  MET Council Well Assessment – Staff will be reviewing this information over the winter to establish the need for expanding the current well system. Currently, the consultant from the Comprehensive Water Plan is updating a ‘trigger’ chart which will indicate the proper timing for adding wells and/or towers to the system.  Smart Meter Update – Staff has been in contact with one neighboring community to discuss their experiences with moving to a ‘smart meter’ program. Approximately 90% of the meters have been changed and one of the benefits at this point is a knowledge of leaks in the system downstream of the meter which allowed the property owner to be alerted to make repairs. In addition, the new technology eliminates moving parts on the meters. Staff will be coordinating a meeting with a supplier in late March to establish a meter replacement program.  Staff is also received quotes for removing the irrigation meter currently installed in single family homes. Final planning and potential start of this project will happen in the upcoming months with a goal of a start date in early spring. A service agreement is being prepared for removal of approximately one-third of these meters this year. This agreement was presented to the City Council at the March 16, 2021 meeting. At this time the Council has tabled the removal of irrigation meters.  Water Usage for 2020 – As provided separately (Item 8b.), the annual pumping for all municipal wells has been compiled. Staff will provide an update on the highest usages at the February 2021 meeting. The water usage for city facilities is provided as a separate document for this meeting. A letter to the top 10% of users was mailed out after the February 2021 meeting and staff has received some calls in response to those letters.  Tour of a Water Tower – Postponed until spring of 2021 at the earliest.
