RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to authorize the recruitment and hiring of a Public
Works Director and to appoint Brian Erickson as City Engineer.
BACKGROUND
At the January 5 work session and as a part of the 2021 budget discussions, Council discussed a re-structure
of the Public Works Department in order to address the growing needs of the City by creating a Department
that is structured in an improved model. Further, the vacancy of the Assistant City Engineer position, a
resignation in the Public Works Coordinator position, and the funding of a part-time GIS position also
provided an opportunity to take a holistic look at the best way to structure this Department.
Ultimately, the recommended structure going forward creates the separation of the Public Works
Director/City Engineer into two separate full-time positions. The Assistant City Engineer position will
remain filled on a part-time basis by a consultant, and the previously authorized hiring of a GIS / Asset
Management Technician completes the full staffing picture for the Department. The Public Works
Department and Administration have worked together on this proposal and we expect that this structure
will better serve the City’s current growth trajectory for years to come.
Staff is requesting the authorization to recruit and fill the Public Works Director position. Brian Erickson
would become the City Engineer effective upon the hiring of the new Director. Brian is well qualified to
transition to this position and has worked for the City for the past 4 years. He is a licensed P.E. and holds
a Master’s in Structural Engineering.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Council authorize the recruitment and hiring of a Public Works Director and the
appointment of Brian Erickson as City Engineer.
