Action Items & Issues List EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Utility Commission Meeting: June 28, 2021 AGENDA SECTION: AGENDA ITEM: Action Items / Issues List Executive Director’s Report PREPARED BY: Brian Erickson, P.E. Director of Public Works AGENDA NO. 8.c. / City Engineer ATTACHMENTS: None APPROVED BY: BLE RECOMMENDED ACTION: None, informational only BACKGROUND Utility Commissioners requested that staff provide updates on the following items for meetings going forward.  Metropolitan Council Well Assessment – Staff participated in two meetings regarding the MCES’s water efficiency tool. It should be noted that this not tool to be used to predict the need for future wells, but instead a tool that can be used to compare various water conservation efforts and how those can possibly reduce future capital costs. Staff will provide a demonstration at the meeting. Additionally, it can assist with showing a return on investment. MCES staff will be attending the July 26, 2021 Utility Commission meeting to demonstrate this tool.  Smart Meter Update – Staff has been in contact with one neighboring community to discuss their experiences with moving to a ‘smart meter’ program. Approximately 90% of the meters have been changed and one of the benefits at this point is a knowledge of leaks in the system downstream of the meter which allowed the property owner to be alerted to make repairs. Staff also had a videoconference with the current water meter vendor to discuss several aspects of the utility metering program. Rosemount has been installing meters with no moving parts for a number of years and will install updated meters as existing meters fail. In addition, there was some discussion about an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. This system has the potential to allow for meter reading via fixed antenna placed throughout the city as well as connecting to the billing software. Additional discussion is needed regarding interfacing and connections.  Tour of a Water Tower – Postponed until spring of 2021 at the earliest.  Water/Stormwater Rebate Update (quarterly) – Next update is scheduled for July 2021.
