RECOMMENDED ACTION: Staff is recommending that the Parks and Recreation
Commission support the purchase and development of the McMenomy Woods as a City
Park and Greenway.
ISSUE
As you may recall, the City’s Parks Master Plan identifies the McMenomy Woods property as a potential
location for a future City Park. The vision was that the property would function as a nature preserve and a
passive park with several walking trails similar Carroll’s Woods. The possibility has been discussed by the
Parks and Recreation Commission for over 20 years.
The County has been working with the McMenomy Family for several years on a purchase of the land.
Much of the funding for the preservation of the property would come from Dakota County and the City
could provide a small share of the funding. Staff will have funding details available at the meeting on
Monday.
The north 55.4-acre portion (large yellow box on map) of the McMenomy property could be a future city
park divided into the Vermillion Highlands greenway corridor and natural area since the County funding
would have two different funding sources. The south 9.9-acre parcel (small yellow box) would be divided
into a future development area and a city owned area that could include a parking area, greenway corridor
and natural area.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff is recommending that the Parks and Recreation Commission support purchase and development of
the McMenomy Woods as a City Park and a Regional Greenway.
