I will have food for you, so please don't feel rushed to eat and run at home I have attached last year's goals document as a refresher for where we are As I've called around to talk to each of you, I have not heard a sense that we (council and staff) are off the track in terms of the big picture issues we are pursuing Nobody has indicated a belief that there are pressing issues needing to be added to the "big vision" list In fact, I could probably reduce the largest and most frequently heard concerns by Council to these categories Athletic Complex fish or cut bait, lay out a plan (and possibly rename "outdoor recreational center" to appeal to broader audience) Downtown general concern about our overall strategy St Joe's lay out a plan (works in tandem with Athletic Complex, er outdoor rec center) Communications not a concern about short- comings but need for continuing efforts and new methods, concern about developing schisms in community Other issues that have been mentioned by individuals include Financial issues range of issues by different council members including progress on reducing tax rate, continuing to develop sound future projections, and possibly moving from line -by -line budget review to program oriented budget discussions Comp Guide Update process update due in 2008, discussion of when and how to conduct public involvement in process Economic development how to specifically target desired businesses (no subliminal message intended by including the word "target Air cargo general discussion On the issue of council relations, both council -staff and between council members, there seems to be a general comfort level I think it is always important for the Council to have a "check -in" with itself, so you may wish to have some discussion about meetings, information sharing, staff relationships, etc I am unaware of any issues but, as I've said, it's nice to have at least a quick discussion along these lines Saturday morning discussion I've mentioned to several (if not all) of you that I would like to leave open whether we continue our work on Saturday morning I believe it is important to have the Council and Staff interact and share ideas At the same time, if we (council and staff) are going to be taking time on a Saturday morning, I want to make sure there is definite value to the time we spend Based on the discussions I've had thus far, it does not seem that there is department specific discussion that cannot be discussed at upcoming work sessions or in future specially scheduled discussions 2/24/2006 &oast SertfivnA__ FAD c2 Zoo4 Page 1 of 2 I have told the senior staff that I will contact them on Friday night to let them know for certain about Saturday morning It may be that we get on a roll on one or two (or more) issues and decide there is value to continuing that momentum with some staff input on Saturday It may only involve one or two directors, so I don't want to preclude us from that possibility I would suggest we take inventory on Friday night as our discussion progresses Regarding Saturday, I know that Director Lindquist is encountering scheduling difficulties because her husband is out of town, and Council Member Shoe- Corrigan's daughter is in town from Montreal and the Corrigans have a hectic weekend schedule as well More than anything, I Just want to make sure your valuable time is well spent. Please do not hesitate to contact me on Friday if there is specific information you would like me to bring I will have maps and flip charts to aid our discussion As always, I'm looking forward to spending time with you These discussions are very useful to help us understand your priorities and thought processes Jamie Verbrugge CityAdministrator 651- 322 -2006 Rosemount, MN "Spirit ofPride and Progress" 2/24/2006 Page 2 of 2
